My name is Ja’Lissa Humphreys, and I am a certified teacher in elementary education with over 10 years of traditional classroom experience and more recently virtual teaching experience. Throughout those 10 years I've always tutored in addition to my teaching because I LOVE supporting student growth. As we've moved into this unsettling time in our world, I realized I could alleviate some anxiety for parents and children with my expertise. I began Little Masterminds as a virtual tutoring solution to streamline the connection between my passion and providing caregivers and parents with the support they need during this global pandemic. Our virtual tutoring options provide safe modes in which we can partner with parents to offer instructional support for students in grades K-5. With my years of tutoring and education experience using various techniques and curricula, I strive to give each child the tools that will help them to succeed.

WHY I TEACH

I teach because I want children to better understand who they are and their value in the world. I teach because I believe in the power of unpacking and mastering ones thoughts and feelings. When we lean into mastering our thoughts and feelings our intrinsic mindset for life rests on a foundation of freedom. I teach because linguistic and mathematic literacy has the power to transform life. I want to prepare kids to be global citizens and live in a world where they are confident enough to create change in a positive way. I want to share my enthusiasm for learning and life with others!

WHAT I TEACH

I teach from a holistic approach. I focus on enhancing my students’ academic, emotional, mental and physical well being. When a child feels comfortable and confident, they can open their minds and know that they can do difficult things. I strive to teach my students to become more accountable by teaching them:

HOW I TEACH

Using various strategies and styles of teaching, I give learners the foundational skills to be successful as lifelong learners. Our virtual tutoring service includes one-on-one, differentiated lessons to guide students in their learning. I work with my students on building both weak and strong areas of learning, and also on addressing any misconceptions from previously taught skills. Using relevant and cutting edge technology, I am able to virtually tutor students anytime and anywhere.

HOW DO I MEASURE EFFECTIVENESS

I use a variety of strategies to measure student understanding during each tutoring session. Strategies I make use of include practice drills, session recaps, comprehension reviews, mindfulness activities, and more! I will also provide monthly progress reports to parents during our virtual consultation. It is important that students receive feedback from classroom teachers, parents and other students, so I make it a point to give this valuable feedback to students.
